Athlete2Athlete...Kaep, you're done kneeling but, I'll shake your hand if I meet you one day! I've watched TV personalities, former athletes and journalists give their opinions on the major TV Networks and print news outlets about you deciding not to kneel anymore during the national anthem. Some calling you a 'hypocrite' or saying you're "changing your stance because of free agency" and "want money over the cause!" But, for an entire NFL season, I saw you back your word up on a stance you felt you had to use your platform to voice your opinion.
Athlete2Athlete...Personally, I wouldn't have kneeled. I knew how you felt at the time. Shit, I was mad too. However, myself and other black athletes felt like kneeling was on the individual athlete. I will never knock you for the action you and other players like Eli Harold, Megan Rapinoe & Broncos B.Marshall chose to take.
Athlete2Athlete...The only thing that helps any athlete under extreme scrutiny in the news or who is trending is WINS. For some reason, WINS help us gain or re-gain public favor. And in the case of kneeling for our countries national anthem, a 2-14 49ers season wasn't going to have anyone rally for you. You weren't trying to beat a 5 game suspension for weed or beat bad publicity for a DUI charge. Dude, you were 'disrespecting' a Nation in some peoples eyes! It sucks that on-field performance determines if an athlete gains public favor. However, in your case, that's the ONLY shot you had to win the favor of the fickle crowd, sponsors & opinionated haters.
Athlete2Athlete...I'm not saying 14-2 or 13-3 would have kept you from being talked about by Tomi Lehran or winning over the patriotic Americans out there. No record can out weighs that outcry. But 10-6 would at least gained you the support of those looking for a leader or a lead voice in the social injustice of police brutality at the time. At 12-4, the same sponsors that forced the NFL and TV Networks to silence you, would have found a way to rally behind you and use you for the face of equality. Athletes have to win! Maybe an 11-5 record would have kept Stephen A. Smith's level of disrespect to your name down a little. Who knows?
Athlete2Athlete...For 6 months and 20 something weeks, you kneeled for what you believed in. People can argue if it was right or wrong. Disrespectful or uplifting all they want but you still continued to do it amongst public backlash and death threats! You kept the discussion and the topic alive, even at 2-14. As I mentioned earlier, other athletes joined you and took kneels because they felt just as strong as you. From August 2016 to present day, we've seen a shift from your 'militant' stance on police brutality to Lebron James & Nikes' equality commercial, starring many big named athletes. 'They're' not going to call you a hero, but they can't say you didn't get people talking!
Athlete2Athlete...You took your stance and stood by it. You put money and time into to the cause. In the end, as an athlete, it's the WINS that help or hurt our cause!
Broncos LB, BRANDON MARSHALL, went from taking a knee to meeting with the Police Department to turn frustration into conversation and action.
US Women's Soccer National Team star, Megan Rapinoe kneeled during in international friendly to express her views on social injustice and lack of equality.
Fast forward to this February 2017 Lebron James & Nike, 'EQUALITY' commercial!
